Tickets have been given out and one driver has been arrested as police crackdown on speeding in the New Forest. 

Officers stopped 16 vehicles for speeding, issuing tickets to five during a day of action as part of Operation Mountie. 

The crackdown is aimed at reducing speeding and raising awareness of animal safety. 

Drivers were caught at 60, 66, 52, 51 and 50mph in a 40mph zone. 

The driver of a van which was pulling a trailer was also arrested after a drug wipe was carried out. 

He was stopped at Hawkhill Inclosure heading into Brockenhurst. 

Both vehicles were seized. 

A police spokesperson wrote on Facebook: "Op Mountie is when we join forces with our colleagues @ForestryEngland, New Forest National Park Authority and New Forest Roads Awareness in an attempt to reduce speeding and raise awareness of animal safety on #NewForest roads, and at this time of year with the stallions and foals out in abundance, sticking to the speed limit is even more important.

"Today’s session lasted for just over two hours and in that time 16 vehicles were stopped for speeding.

"Tickets were given to five drivers for recording speeds of 60, 55, 52, 51 and 50mph on a 40mph road – the others were spoken to by our partners in a bid to change the way they drive and to slow them down especially in the Forest.

"Again we feel that it is important to stress that the majority of drivers did stick to the speed limit and for that we are very grateful."
