Neighbours have spoken of their shock after a man was seriously injured in what is being investigated as an attempted murder.

Armed police were at Kent House, Kent Street, on Tuesday night when the man in his 40s was assaulted.

Officers were called in by paramedics, while the air ambulance was also drafted in and landed at a nearby park on Radcliffe Road.

The assault victim was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Police arrested a 35-year-old Southampton man on suspicion of assault.  A spokeswoman said the victim’s injuries are more serious than initially thought and the man was then arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers also arrested a 34-year-old woman from Southampton on suspicion of intentionally assisting/encouraging the commission of an offence.

Both remained in police custody as of Wednesday afternoon.

A huge police cordon was in place on Tuesday night with residents asked to move away from the area.

On Wednesday morning, the cordon remained at Kent House as crime scene investigators were seen going into the property.

Armed police remained in the area and PCSOs were patrolling the streets.

Neighbours have told the Echo of their shock and described what they saw.

One man, who asked not to be named, said: “There were five ambulances of police cars.

“It got very busy and I also heard a helicopter flying over. Police were here all night and have been here this morning.

“Attempted murder is quite serious, hopefully, the man is doing okay, we do wish our best wishes to him.”

People also took to social media to share and express their shock.

One Facebook user, Stella Pring, said: “This is terrible what's happening to the world."

Tany Harryman added: “I hope the poor man pulls through.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We would like to reassure local residents that all those involved are known to each other, and we don’t believe there to be a wider risk to the public at the current time.

“Anyone with concerns or questions is asked to please speak to officers in the area today.”
